At Dingus Orthodontics, we’re here to help you “smile with confidence,” even while wearing braces. Some common problems may occur during your treatment, but you can be confident that we’ll solve them.
Common Problems
Wire poking – At times, this problem may be due to a loosening of the ligature wires or the end of the archwire being bent or long. To correct it, you can use the eraser end of a pencil to apply light pressure to the wire that is irritating to the lips or cheek. If this doesn’t help, apply wax to the wire and call for an appointment.
Wire out of bracket in the back of the mouth – When you first get your braces, we use thin archwires. Sometimes these wires pull out, especially when you eat sticky or hard foods. To repair, try placing the wire into the molar tube. If this doesn’t work, try using a fingernail clipper to cut the wire behind the next attached bracket. Or, call for an appointment.
Broken archwire or headgear, lost ligature wire or hook – These problems could cause the teeth to shift in the wrong direction, so they must be corrected as soon as possible. Please call for an emergency appointment.
Loose band or bracket – If a bracket or band loosens and is still attached to the wire, leave it in place. If uncomfortable, cover with wax. If the bracket comes out completely, bring it with you to the next appointment. Do not connect headgear or elastics to a loose band.
Tender teeth or gum irritation – When you first get your braces, your teeth may become tender, especially while chewing food. This is normal and due to the gradual correction of your teeth. If necessary, take two aspirin, Tylenol or Advil to relieve the discomfort. For gum irritation that may be caused by wires or hooks rubbing the inside of your mouth, apply wax for relief. If this doesn’t help, please call for an appointment.
Injury and allergic reactions – Injuries to the mouth may cause severe cuts to the lips or cheeks. Allergic reactions are rare, but may appear as a rash or sore in the mouth. Call for an appointment if you have concerns about an injury or allergic reaction. If serious, go to an Urgent Care or nearest hospital emergency room for treatment.
TMJ Issues
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint that lets your lower jaw move. This movement allows you to open and close your mouth and chew from side to side. If your teeth don’t fit together properly (called the bite), the TMJ and your jaw muscles may be affected.
TMJ problems not only include jaw discomfort, but can also lead to neck and shoulder pain and severe headaches, as well as have an impact on swallowing, speaking and your appearance. There are a number of reasons why our patients have TMJ problems including injury, clenching or grinding the teeth, arthritis or poorly aligned teeth. If you feel you are experiencing an issue that may be TMJ related, please bring it to our attention. At Dingus Orthodontics, we specialize in diagnosing bite and TMJ problems.
